«Dr. Zhivago» – new restaurant by Alexander Rappoport has conformable with its name pre-revolutionary spirit and a view at the main tourist crossroad.
The restaurant has opened on the ground floor of Hotel «National» with the view of the Kremlin and Manezhnaya Square. It has traditional Russian, but modern cuisine.
«Dr. Zhivago» has interesting interior: mosaics at the ceiling, chandeliers in the form of the Kremlin stars, colorful peasant by Malevich, Petrov-Vodkin, Dejneka and Samohvalov. Porcelain figurines, paintings on the walls, plaster workers and collective farmers – everything looks very Russian.
The food is good, cheap and plentiful: carps in sour cream (640 rubles -€13), “Olivier” (Russian Salad) with smoked chicken (350 rubles – €7), solyanka (meat soup) (300 rubles -€6), goose with cranberries (740 rubles – €15) and duck with pickled apples (780 rubles – €16).
Chefs in «Dr. Zhivago» do not use balsamic vinegar, replacing it with derivatives of cranberry, they use flaxseed and pumpkin oils instead the olive one, geese are bought in a monastery, herring is brought from Murmansk and Astrakhan. There is a beverage room, with a collection of at least 200 types of vodka and distillates that are stored at the appropriate temperature.
