Travel to Russia requires an entry visa. You can get it at local Russian Consulate or Embassy. There are different categories of visas to Russia based upon the purpose of the trip and the duration of stay in Russia.
Citizens of some countries do not need a visa to enter Russian Federation, but the duration of their stay is limited. For longer residence, education or working in Russia visa is required.

It is always advisable to consult your local Russian embassy/consulate to find out whether any additional documentation is required.
In the airport, in addition to the Visa, you will be required to have a Migration Card. You can get it either at the plane or at the desks before the border check point at the airport. This is a kind of identity document. It is produced to register a new coming foreign resident. The migration card consists of two identical parts. The immigration officer takes the completed and signed part A. The part B is left for the visitor to be kept with the passport during the whole term of the stay.
Standard tourist visa can be single-entry or double-entry and can be issued for no longer than 30 days only (some countries including the United States have an agreement with Russian authorities so their citizens will obtain a 3 year multiple entry visa).
Single-entry and double-entry business visas can be valid for the period of no longer than 90 days.
Multiple entry business visa can be valid for 1 year or 3 years depending on the invitation submitted.

If you have relatives or friends in Russia you may apply for this type of visa submitting a standard Private (Homestay) Invitation. It can be obtained by your Russian relatives or friends from a local office of Russian Federal Migration Service located in the Russian Federation only.
Short term student visa is valid for up to three months. Long term student visa is valid for more than three months.
Work visa can be valid for single or multiple entries. Multiple Entry Work visa can be valid for 1 year or 3 years depending on the invitation submitted.
If you travel by airplane transit visa permits you to travel through the Russian territory without staying (depending on your tickets information). This type of visa can be valid for up to 72 hours only.
If you using other means of transportation (railway train, car, bus, ferry, etc.) or you apply for double transit visa (to the country of your final destination and back) it can be valid for up to 10 days only.
