Over twenty leading Russian collectors have been invited to choose one significant artwork from their collection and share why they made this choice.
Exhibition «Personal Choice: works from private collections of contemporary art» explores art collecting in Russia and as subjective phenomenon, based on individual relationship between the owner and the product. Many works have a special meaning for their owners; they were assembled through personal passions and subjective taste, or have a personal hidden story behind them.
Russia has a long history of private collecting. Thus Masterpieces selected by Pavel Tretyakov have laid the foundation for one of the largest museum collections in Russia, Tretyakovskaya Gallery. However, the 1917 Revolution broke in the private collecting traditions. Only during the rapidly transformative 1990s, the practice of art collecting art was revived. Contemporary collectors are interested in modern Russian and international art. Collecting becomes a social gesture, where the personal commitment of building a private collection makes a significant contribution to public life now or in the future.
The exhibition will present works selected by some of the most prominent contemporary collectors in the country.
