Moscow Urban Forum has announced the winner of the international competition for the concept of the Moskva River embankment: Russian bureau «Project Meganom», leaded by architect Yuri Grigoryan turned out to be the best. The bureau intends to place at least 37 ‘Ports of the Future’ in Moscow by 2035.
The concept of embankments is more an urban problem, not so much architectural. The project by «Meganom» involves the creation of public spaces near the waterfront, development of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure along the river. City plans and project requirements assumed that the Moskva River embankment would become multideck, with public spaces near the water and pedestrian zones on the way. The nearest to the river areas will receive the so-called ports, through which you will be able to change to water transport modes.
Unified style for all embankments was nor formed. However, the basis of the concept is creation of an integrated cultural and recreational coastal territory – to let one embankment flow into another, the closer to the Kremlin – the less concrete. Areas adjacent to the water will become new parks – according to the concept, the embankments will be spaces for cultural activities, recreation, sports and unity with nature.
Industrial territories, situated near water will also change a lot. Along the north shore, there will appear special green islands for water treatment, which will have very natural look. The Vodootvodny channel embankment will obtain a wide promenade and ‘cushions’ from grass, which will cover the surface of the water.
The future parliamentary complex in Mnevniki will have Parliamentary gardens – a system of ten parks and gardens that, according to the plan, will become a new major tourist attraction. There will appear a monumental public area, with an underground parking, and a metro line even lower.
The ZIL territory will have three pedestrian areas – original axis of the plant’s territory, which will converge to the edge of the peninsula. Each axis will have its letter. The first axis, «З» will be for culture and trade, with dynamic composition of architectural forms and an active social life. The second axis is the Moscow analogue of the Silicon Valley – «И» will be a place for offices of large companies and smaller start-ups for innovation. The third axis «Л» will be an area with numerous cafes, restaurants and entertainment facilities, and on the other side – residential area with houses overhanging the water.
Stroginskaya floodplain will obtain six sport and recreation areas, which will be located at a distance from each other – on the shores of Sportivnoe Lake. One area to another would be reached by water transport. Each zone will have its own functionality, services and unique ‘green building’. At the same time, the pedestrian boulevard that links the lake and the Sports Park in Strogino will be renovated.
Overall, the project of coastal areas development involves the formation of public open spaces. Areas near water will be available for everyone – to enjoy walks, sports, nature and cultural entertainment.
